What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll be using ChatGPT's photo analysis feature to identify unknown parts, get cross-reference part numbers, and troubleshoot unfamiliar systems — all from your phone while standing on the job. No more calling the supply house to describe a part while the customer watches.
What you'll need
Download the ChatGPT app from the App Store or Google Play if you don't have it. Sign in. Make sure you're on the GPT-4o model (tap the model name at the top to switch if needed).
What you should see: A chat interface with a camera icon or attachment icon in the text bar.
On the job, take a clear photo of the part you're trying to identify. For best results:
In the ChatGPT app, tap the camera/attachment icon. Select your photo. Then type your question:
Tap send.
What you should see: ChatGPT analyzes the image and responds with an identification, likely part numbers, and any installation notes within a few seconds.
The first response often gives you a starting point — follow up to get exactly what you need:
If you can't get a good photo (dark crawlspace, corroded markings), describe the part in detail:
"I have a single-handle shower faucet from approximately the late 1990s or early 2000s. The handle is lever-style, pulls straight out rather than turning. The cartridge is white plastic, about 3 inches long. There's a faint embossed mark that might say 'Price Pfister'. What cartridge do I need?"
Faucet cartridge: "What is this faucet cartridge and what's the exact replacement part number? [attach photo]"
Fixture brand/model: "I need to order parts for this [sink/tub/shower] fixture. What brand and model is it? [attach photo]"
Code compliance question: "Is this water heater installation setup code compliant? I'm seeing [describe configuration]. [attach photo if possible]"
Diagnosing a problem: "Customer says this [appliance/fixture] is [symptom]. Looking at it, I see [describe what you observe]. What are the most likely causes and where should I start diagnosing?"
Unfamiliar system: "I've never worked on this [type of system — e.g., tankless water heater, water softener]. Walk me through how it works and what I should check first."
